Montana TheatreWorks
Artist-in-Residence Program

The philosophy of Montana TheatreWorks is to encourage students to develop an interest in and an understanding of all aspects of the performing arts. Through our Artist-in-Residence program MTW can offer students everything from acting classes to fully staged productions. We are happy to come into your school and tailor a program to fit your needs and your budget. Classes can also be organized to incorporate material that compliments your school's current curriculum. MTW's emphasis is to help each student gain confidence and skills that will last him or her a lifetime.

Prices for this service vary depending upon the type of program and the time involved. Montana TheatreWorks is aware that funding for the arts is limited within the school budgets. We are always looking for funding for arts programs and may be able to suggest ways that your school or organization can afford an Artist-in-Residence program.

This past spring the Irving program expanded to present three fully-staged productions: A Thousand Cranes, a play which deals with the aftermath of the bombing of Hiroshima, Romeo and Juliet, and, to tie in school curriculum of pioneer life in early Montana, a western melodrama. Under the direction of Mary Jo Ludin, who created the program, 80 children participated in these shows, as well as a 10-week theatre skills class.

The goal of this program is not to turn fifth-graders into budding actors, but to teach students how to best present themselves and give each child the self-confidence needed when speaking in front of others. Many former students of the program have reported back to their elementary teachers that what they learned served them well in middle and high school. Ultimately, these skills will be most important when entering the real world and the all important job interview.

One of the main reasons MTW selected Irving Elementary is that this school has the highest percentage of low-income and poverty level students in the valley. The program is offered to all kids at no charge. For many of these children, this is their only extra-curricular activity and it is important to MTW that we give each of these kids this opportunity. Who knows what door it may open for their future, and that is worth most any price. It's also important to note that no school or public funds pays for this program. MTW seeks grants and solicits local businesses to underwrite all costs.

"Montana TheatreWorks has a proven track record in the Bozeman community for high quality children's theatre workshops and performances." Jim Bruggeman, Irving Elementary School Principal
